This was an interesting little PR nugget that we recent found in the archives of the publisher Viking Press (now owned by Penguin Books). The below memo is a pitch from Viking PR director Pat MacManus to Tony Bailey, an editor of The New Yorker. In the typed memo MacManus works to garner press for Jack Kerouac’s On the Road in the well respected Talk of the Town column.

This document is interesting to us as PR people because, while this type of pitch is done almost exclusively over email these days, the language is basically the same now as it was back then. It goes to show, the delivery method may change, but the message is still the same. On the Road went on to become one of the most popular and lauded books of the era and helped define the “Beat Generation.” With a little help from Kerouac’s PR agent of course.

The fall is the perfect time to visit Japan, which is exactly when we were there last year. Our mission was equal parts business and pleasure. We checked out the shops, hung out in Tokyo and took the train to the Izu Peninsula for onsen. We also met up with our client Red Wing to meet the Japan team, have lunch and see the new company offices. It was great to see the operations and talk about all of the amazing stuff that is happening in Japan for Red Wing. The group there is very good at what they do, which is obvious when you see all of the people that wear Red Wing boots in Japan. Some photos from our visit below. Enjoy!
